This may well be the most scenic ride in all of Cambodia. Kampot province is known for its dramatic limestone rock formations and mountains. This trail cuts straight through some of the best scenery in the area including Phnom Sor and other formations near Kampong Trach, various salt fields and Secret Beach near Kep. What could be better at the end of a ride than to jump in the ocean at Kep beach before indulging in Asia’s best kept secret paradise town for a day or two?

Getting There

The starting point for this route is the town of Chuuk which is about 100km from Phnom Penh on highway 3 on the way to Kampot. It is possible to bike to Chuuk the day before from Phnom Penh but this would involve some highway riding and determination to finish the 100km with little scenic reward. If attempting this way, try the currently unpaved highway #124 which offers a more pleasant experience than highway 3.

Another option is to catch transportation the night before. Our favourite local blue minivans make the haul to Kampot, passing through Chuuk or alternatively, private transportation can be arranged. One suggestion (khmere language required) is Pov and Pou at 092 770 848 who operate a minivan and have experience tying bicycles to the back (and making this journey, dropping off in Chuuk then picking up in Kep later). Probably four or five people max for this option.

One guesthouse is noted on the map in Chuuk. There is a nice barbeque place a few houses to the east from here. A restaurant (for breakfast if desired) is noted in the center of Chuuk town also.

76km

Difficulty

This trail is pretty flat as most in Cambodia. Typical warnings of rainy season mud and flooding exist as usual. The trail branching south from Highway 33 after Kampong Trach can be rocky and bumpy. This rough terrain can be skipped but then you have to take the highway (33) and Kep loop road (#33A) all the way instead.
